Modern kitchen chandelier: island or table, size, materials and height
Sommaire
A modern kitchen chandelier does two things at once: it lights the table or the island, and it sets the style of the whole room. Clean lines, easy-to-clean materials, the right height and the right size: this guide helps you choose a kitchen chandelier that stays beautiful and practical day to day.
The kitchen is no longer just a workroom: we have breakfast there, entertain there, do homework there. The light hanging above the table or the island becomes its focal point.
This guide focuses on the chandelier and on modern style. For the general rules on spacing pendant lights or the full lighting plan for the kitchen, we point you to our dedicated guides along the way.

1. Kitchen chandelier or pendant: the difference
In everyday speech, any decorative light hanging from the ceiling gets called a chandelier. Strictly speaking, a chandelier brings several light sources together on one structure: arms, a bar, a ring or a cluster. A pendant, on the other hand, usually has just one source.
In the kitchen, this difference matters: a chandelier with several sources spreads light better over a long island or a large table, and it makes a stronger style statement. For everything about single pendants, spacing and number, see our guide to the kitchen pendant light.
2. What makes a modern kitchen chandelier
A modern chandelier is recognisable by its clean lines, minimal ornament and honest materials. Several families sit side by side.

| Modern style | Typical shapes | Materials | Ideal kitchen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimalist | Linear bar, slim ring | Lacquered metal, integrated LED | White kitchen, handleless fronts |
| Graphic | Geometric cage, diamond, slender arms | Black metal | White or light wood kitchen, glass partition |
| Modern industrial | Domes in a row, bar | Metal, wood | Loft, concrete, encaustic tiles |
| Organic | Rounded shapes, globes | Ceramic, stone, glass | Wooden kitchen, stone worktop |
| Natural contemporary | Woven domes, simple lines | Rattan, wood | Kitchen open to the living room |
To explore modern shapes beyond the kitchen, see our guide to the modern designer chandelier. The graphic black metal style is also covered in black chandelier and black ceiling light.
3. Above the table or the island: two uses
The same chandelier does not necessarily suit both spots. The island is a work area, the table a place for getting together.
| Criterion | Above the island | Above the table |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Lighting chopping and preparation | Lighting plates and faces |
| Recommended shape | Linear, bar, 2 to 3 domes in a row | Round, cluster, ring or arm chandelier |
| Light | Directed downwards, 3000 K | Softer, 2700 to 3000 K, dimmer |
| Height of the bottom of the light | 65 to 80 cm above the worktop | 70 to 85 cm above the tabletop |
In an open-plan kitchen, the island and the table are often seen together: choose two lights from the same family rather than two opposing styles. Our guide to lighting a kitchen open to the living room helps you link the areas.
4. The island chandelier: bar or pendants in a row
Two solutions dominate. The bar carries several sources on a single rod, with one connection point: it is the cleanest, very modern version. Pendants in a row, two or three identical domes, leave more freedom in the spacing.
A simple guide: the lit length should be about the length of the island minus 60 cm, leaving a 30 cm margin on each side. Multiple bars and ceiling roses are covered in our guide to the 3-light and multi-light pendant.

Above a round or square table, a centred three-arm chandelier or a geometric cage works very well. Above a rectangular table, go for an elongated shape or two lights. Our 3-light black iron diamond chandelier or our rectangular industrial wooden pendant illustrate these two approaches. The chandelier should stay within the footprint of the table, so nobody bumps into it when getting up.
6. What size of chandelier for the kitchen

| Surface | Dimension | Recommended chandelier |
|---|---|---|
| Island | 120 to 150 cm | Bar of 60 to 90 cm or 2 pendants |
| Island | 180 to 240 cm | Bar of 120 to 180 cm or 3 pendants |
| Round table | 90 to 120 cm | Chandelier of 45 to 65 cm in diameter |
| Rectangular table | 160 to 200 cm | Linear chandelier of 90 to 130 cm |
A chandelier that is too small looks lost above a large surface. Above a table, aim for a width of about half to two thirds of the tabletop.
7. Easy-to-clean materials
The kitchen produces steam and grease, especially above a hob set into an island. The material of the chandelier determines how much time you spend looking after it.
| Material | Cleaning | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Smooth lacquered metal | Very easy, sponge and mild cleaner | Ideal above a cooking island |
| Smooth glass | Easy, removable | Marks show on clear glass |
| Glazed ceramic | Easy | Gloss glaze easier than matt |
| Stone | Damp cloth, no acidic cleaner | Better above the table |
| Rattan, raw wood, fabric | Trickier, grease clings to it | Keep for the table, away from cooking |

8. How high to hang a kitchen chandelier
Above an island, the bottom of the chandelier usually sits 65 to 80 cm above the worktop: low enough to light it, high enough not to block the view or anyone's head. Above a table, allow 70 to 85 cm from the tabletop. Under a high ceiling, a height-adjustable pendant makes fine-tuning easier. All the heights are brought together in our guide to pendant light height.
9. What light for a kitchen chandelier
Above a work island, aim for about 300 to 500 lux on the surface, which in practice means 800 to 1,000 lumens per source for two or three light points. A temperature of 3000 K stays warm while showing the true colour of food, and a CRI of 90 or more helps you judge the cooking. See CRI explained. A dimmer lets you go from preparing to dinner: see the pendant with a dimmer.

A chandelier is not enough to light a whole kitchen. It adds to general lighting, light strips under the wall units and sometimes kitchen wall lights. To organise these layers, from the ceiling to the worktop, follow our full kitchen lighting plan.
11. In short
A modern kitchen chandelier is chosen first for where it goes: linear shape and directed light above the island, round shape or cluster above the table. Set its length to the island minus 60 cm, hang it 65 to 85 cm above the surface, choose a smooth material near the cooking and a 3000 K light with a good CRI. For styles with several visible bulbs, see also industrial style.
Frequently asked questions
Which chandelier for a modern kitchen?
A chandelier with clean lines: linear bar, black metal geometric cage, glass globes or ceramic domes. Choose it according to the colour of the units and where it goes, island or table.
How high should a chandelier hang above an island?
The bottom of the chandelier usually sits 65 to 80 cm above the worktop. Adjust it to the height of the people using the kitchen and the view to the living area.
What size of chandelier for a 2 metre island?
A bar of about 140 cm or three pendants spread over this length, leaving about 30 cm of margin at each end.
Chandelier or pendants in a row above an island?
The bar is cleaner and has only one connection point. Pendants in a row are more flexible in spacing and choice of shape. Both suit a modern kitchen.
Which chandelier material is easiest to clean in a kitchen?
Smooth lacquered metal, smooth glass and gloss-glazed ceramic. Avoid rattan, fabric and openwork shapes above the cooking area.
Which colour temperature for a kitchen chandelier?
3000 K is a good compromise between warmth and colour accuracy. Choose a CRI of 90 or more to see food properly.
Can you put a crystal chandelier in a kitchen?
It is possible above a table away from the cooking, but the drops hold grease and need frequent cleaning. Near the hob, a smooth shape is more sensible.
Does a kitchen chandelier need a dimmer?
It is recommended: full power for cooking, lower light for dinner. Check that the LED bulbs are compatible with the dimmer.
