Brass pendant light: brushed, polished or aged, styles and care
Sommaire
A brass pendant light brings a golden glow to the ceiling, warm and more nuanced than gold. Brushed, polished or aged, solid or just a finish: this guide helps you read a product sheet, choose the finish for your style and look after brass without damaging it.
Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, has lit Parisian brasseries, ocean liners and art deco flats. Today it is back as fine domes, globes and minimalist rods, often paired with stone, wood or black metal.
Behind the word “brass”, however, the products on sale vary a great deal: solid metal, plating or simple gold paint. Let us start there.

1. Why brass is back on the ceiling
Brass has a golden yellow colour that is softer than pure gold and brighter than bronze. On the ceiling, it warms a room without overloading it. Switched off, it remains a decorative object; switched on, it casts golden reflections on the walls and the table.
Its other strength is versatility: it works as well in a classic interior with mouldings as in a pared-back setting with pale stone. For an overview of all the golden shades, from brass to brushed gold, see our guide to the gold chandelier and gold pendant light. Here, we focus on brass itself.
2. Solid brass, plated or brass finish: reading the product sheet
Many pendants sold as “brass” contain only a thin layer of it, or none at all. That is not a flaw, but it changes the weight, the patina and the care.

| Wording on the sheet | What it is | Patina | Care |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solid brass | The shade or frame is made of brass | Yes, if it is not lacquered | Can be restored |
| Lacquered brass | Brass protected by a clear lacquer | Very slow | Soft cloth only |
| Brass-plated | Thin layer of brass on steel or zinc | Limited | Never use abrasives |
| Brass finish, brass colour | Paint, lacquer or gold treatment | None | Dry cloth, no products |
3. Brushed, polished, aged: brass finishes
With the same material, the finish completely changes the character of the pendant.
| Finish | Look | Reflections | Style |
|---|---|---|---|
| Polished brass | Mirror-like, very shiny | Strong, can dazzle | Art deco, classic, hotel |
| Brushed brass | Satin, fine lines | Soft, diffuse | Contemporary, Japandi |
| Aged, patinated brass | Golden brown, nuanced | Faint | Vintage, rustic chic |
| Matt, satin brass | Even, no shine | Very faint | Minimalist |
Brushed is the easiest finish to live with: it hides fingerprints better and reflects light without the glare of polished brass. Aged suits interiors that embrace the passing of time, like those described in our guide to the vintage pendant light.
4. Brass, gold, copper, bronze: telling them apart
Brass is golden yellow. Copper leans towards pinkish orange, then turns brown: it has its own guide, the copper pendant light. Bronze is browner and darker. Finally, gold refers to a colour, not a metal: it may be brass, anodised aluminium or paint. On the same wall or ceiling, avoid mixing brass and copper, which clash; choose a single warm metal and repeat it.
5. The light of a brass pendant
Brass is opaque: a solid brass pendant sends light out through its opening, usually downwards, like a bell or dome pendant. If the inside of the shade is left in brass, it slightly tints the light with a golden hue; if it is lacquered white, it gives a more neutral, stronger light.
It is therefore an excellent light for a table or an island, less so for lighting a whole room. We explain how each material colours light in light and materials: travertine, wood and brass.
6. Which style for a brass pendant

- Art deco: polished brass, fan shapes, opal glass globes. See art deco style.
- Fifties and sixties: slim rods, articulated arms, small brushed brass cones.
- Classic: chandeliers with arms and candle bulbs, aged brass.
- Contemporary and Japandi: fine brushed brass dome, paired with pale stone and light wood.
- Industrial chic: brass and black metal mixed, to warm up a dark setting.

| Room | Recommended finish | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen, island | Lacquered or brushed brass | Grease and steam: a lacquer makes care easier |
| Dining room | Polished or brushed | Bottom of the shade 70 to 85 cm above the table |
| Living room | Brushed, aged | Add lamps, as brass lights downwards |
| Bedroom | Matt or brushed | Avoid bright reflections above the bed |
| Bathroom | Lacquered only | IP rating suited to the zone |

8. Which materials to pair with brass
Brass shines more next to matt materials. Pale stone is its best partner, as shown in combining stone and brass and stone and brass wall lights. Walnut and dark oak give it a mid-century air, sage or bottle green a brasserie feel, black metal a graphic contrast.

Always switch off the power and let the bulb cool before cleaning.

- Lacquered, plated brass or brass finish: dry or barely damp microfibre cloth, never metal polish or an abrasive sponge.
- Raw, polished solid brass: a dedicated brass cleaner, applied with a soft cloth, restores the shine. Test it on a hidden area first.
- Aged brass: dust only. Rubbing it would remove the patina that gives it its charm.
Our guide to caring for your lights by material completes this advice.
10. Which bulb to choose
Brass calls for warm light: 2700 K for a muted atmosphere, 3000 K above a worktop. Beyond that, the gold takes on an unflattering greenish tinge. If the bulb sticks out of the shade, choose a decorative filament model or a crown-silvered bulb that reflects the light back up into the dome. See 2700K, 3000K or 4000K.
11. In short
Before buying a brass pendant, check whether it is solid, lacquered, plated brass or just a finish: the care depends on it. Choose polished for art deco shine, brushed for a contemporary interior, aged for a vintage setting. Pair it with stone, wood or black, and stick to warm light. For matching wall lights, see our guide to the gold, brass or copper wall light.
Frequently asked questions
How can you tell if a pendant is solid brass?
Solid brass is heavier than plated metal and is not attracted by a magnet, unlike plated steel. Above all, rely on the product sheet: “solid brass” and “brass finish” do not mean the same thing.
What is the difference between brushed and polished brass?
Polished brass shines like a mirror and strongly reflects light. Brushed brass has a satin surface with fine lines, softer and less prone to fingerprints.
How do you clean a brass pendant?
Switch off the power, then wipe with a dry microfibre cloth. Keep brass cleaners for unlacquered solid brass, never for painted or plated finishes.
Does brass darken over time?
Raw brass oxidises and develops a golden brown patina. Lacquered brass changes very slowly, and a brass-coloured finish does not develop a patina.
Can you put a brass pendant in a kitchen?
Yes, preferably lacquered or brushed, which are easier to degrease. Hang the bottom of the shade 65 to 80 cm above the worktop.
What is the difference between brass and gold?
Brass is a metal, an alloy of copper and zinc. “Gold” here refers to a colour, which can be achieved on aluminium, on steel or with paint.
Do brass and black metal go together?
Yes, it is a classic contrast. Keep one dominant metal and use the other as an accent, for example a brass pendant with black handles.
Which bulb for a brass pendant?
An LED at 2700 or 3000 K. If the bulb is visible, choose a filament or crown-silvered model to avoid glare.
